Womxn. Music. Stories.
Each womxn’s life has its own soundtrack: songs that become symbolic of important moments and relationships, creative sparks, challenges, and triumphs. This is where you’ll hear womxn who make music share the music that made them. We explore the transportive power of song, and its lasting impact on womxn’s lives and creativity. As music fans, we've long heard and enjoyed artist-curated playlists, but Mixtape Memoir brings a new and exciting twist to this concept, told from a female (and feminist) perspective. Guest, host, and audience share in the experience of listening and remembering. The guest’s selected songs are cued, and at key moments in each story, host Carmel Holt spontaneously hits play, and we get to hear guests listen and respond to the songs they’ve chosen, as their personal mixtape unfolds in real time.
Why focus specifically on womxn’s stories and their personal playlists? Because womxn’s roles, pursuits, and achievements in music are still defined by our gender. Many of us experience stereotypes and barriers to success that surround us while we are shaping who we want to become in music spaces still dominated by men. Through storytelling and music we want to challenge those stereotypes, break barriers, and build understanding.
These conversations share perspectives not yet equally represented in music, while creating an archive of womxn’s stories told with their personal soundtracks. And those personal soundtracks themselves can be eye-opening: challenging stereotypes of what “women’s music” is, what moves us, what shapes us, what drives us, and what we hear as women and as artists.
With each sonic and personal journey you hear, it is our hope that we build belief in our limitless potential. To hear, to listen, and to be heard.
Mixtape Memoir is hosted by Carmel Holt, longtime public radio host and interviewer, and creator and host of SHEROES Radio - a nationally syndicated weekly feminist music and interview show, and the longform interview podcast, SHEROES (distributed by Talkhouse).

About Carmel
Carmel Holt is a podcast host and radio personality with a proven ear for curation and presentation. Over the past two decades, she has become known for her warm delivery, passionate support of new and emerging talent, and her natural rapport with artists. She has hosted engaging, conversational interviews with everyone from Courtney Barnett to Cat Power, Death Cab For Cutie to Paul McCartney, Mitski to Maggie Rogers, Bob Weir to Yola, Leon Bridges to The National, Ex Hex to The xx. Her extensive knowledge of music, and affinity for connecting with artists has made her a trusted and beloved host.
Carmel spent the first decade and a half of her career at Radio Woodstock, WDST (Woodstock, NY) where she was Midday host, interviewer, and a three-time award winning Music Director. In 2013, she moved on to WFUV Public Radio in New York City as a full time radio host, interviewer and Assistant Music Director, and she also became a regular NPR Music contributor, freelance interviewer, and voiceover artist. In 2019, Carmel left WFUV to develop SHEROES, a feminist music podcast, thanks to a podcast incubator funded by SONOS.
In 2020 Carmel reimagined the SHEROES podcast concept as a one hour weekly syndicated feminist radio show, featuring interviews and playlists that span genres and generations, with a mission to “turn up the volume” of womxn’s voices on the airwaves and in music. SHEROES Radio airs weekly on twenty affiliate public radio stations nationwide, and is an independent, female-powered production hosted and produced by Carmel.
Mixtape Memoir was Carmel’s next production under her SHEROES brand; a sister show to SHEROES Radio, and another avenue towards building understanding of womxn’s unique perspective and experiences of working in music. The show launched on International Women’s Day, March 8th, 2021 on Sonos Sound System.
A life-long student of music, Carmel grew up singing and playing the piano, acting, and performing in musical theater, and received a BA in music composition and vocal performance at Bard College. Her devotion to a life of music comes from her deepest held belief that music is the most powerful tool for expression, bringing people together, and a vehicle for positive change.
