Aimee Mann’s Mixtape Memoir:
There Is Always A Door

I’ll admit - it’s wild to talk to a guest whose music has been such a part of my own life soundtrack. Maybe yours too? Maybe you, like me, were obsessed with ‘Til Tuesday and “Voices Carry'' in the mid-80’s, or cried your eyes out to “Save Me” and the Magnolia Soundtrack in the late 90’s? For a certain generation, Aimee Mann's music has seemingly never not been there, and to this day she continues to create timeless, intelligent, tender, sardonic and sad songs that feel simultaneously fresh and classic.

Born in 1960 in Richmond, Virginia, Aimee grew up with the melancholy folk of the era on her parents stereo and her father playing standards on the piano. Her passion for playing music took hold when she was twelve and found a discarded guitar to play in a sibling’s closet, and from there, Aimee became a dedicated student of music. The bass was her instrument of choice, and as she developed her ear and her love of well crafted lyrics, she pushed through the gender barrier to becoming a bass player and musician. A few semesters at Berklee College of Music brought her to Boston where a vibrant music scene gave Aimee a running start.

From ‘Til Tuesday to her now ten solo albums, Aimee Mann has maintained an uncompromising devotion to her art, leaving her major label in the late 90’s on the cusp of the game-changing Magnolia Soundtrack and Bachelor No.2, Aimee’s third solo album. That would be the first album she would release independently on her own SuperEgo Records, and this is what we will hear Aimee refer to as finding a door. What that door opened up to was her first three Grammy’s nominations, an Academy Award nomination, and a Golden Globe award nomination.

Aimee now has six Grammy nominations and two awards to her name, including one for her last album, 2018’s Mental Illness. Now she’s about to release the follow up to that album, Queens of the Summer Hotel, her tenth studio album, which was born out of another door Aimee has recently opened - composing songs for a Broadway musical version of the book Girl, Interrupted. Listen in as Aimee Mann joins us to create her Mixtape Memoir.
